Mythbusting: Why Saddle Weight Is the Wrong Thing to Worry About

When riders compare saddles, it's tempting to focus on the number on the scale, lighter means better right? Not always the case. The bigger conversation that can get overlooked is how that weight is distributed which makes all the difference to your horse's comfort, movement, and long-term health.

Weight Alone Is a Red Herring

A heavier saddle that distributes load evenly across a wide panel area can place far less localised pressure on sensitive muscle and tissue than a lighter saddle that concentrates force in the wrong places.

Pressure testing has shown consistently that WOW Saddles are able to balance and distribute pressure across the horse's back in a way that most conventional flocked saddles simply can't match. The result is a more even contact, reduced pressure hotspots, and a horse that can move more freely underneath you.

25 Years of Getting Lighter and Stronger

WOW Saddles have been designed, refined, and ridden for over two decades. If you own, and are still riding one of our early saddles, you may already know just how well they stand the test of time.

Those original saddles from the early 2000s featured heavier resin trees, and yes, they weighed more as a result. But here's the thing: many of them are still in use today. That's not an accident. It's a testament to the quality of construction that has always been at the heart of how WOW saddles are made.

What's changed is the technology. In 2006 we introduced a lighter leather and plastic tree, and in 2015 we moved to a fully plastic tree incorporating a carbon fibre Y-bar  delivering a saddle that is lighter and stronger with each generation. So if someone tells you they tried a WOW saddle years ago and found it heavy, they may well be right… but they haven't tried today’s WOW?

What Flair Air Flocking Actually Does

Traditional wool or foam flocking compresses and compacts over time. It starts firm and gradually loses its ability to evenly distribute load which is why conventional saddles need regular reflocking to stay in balance.

Flair® air flocking works differently.

The Flair® system uses four interconnected air cushions to create a soft, flexible, and even bearing surface without pressure points.

Unlike traditional flocking, adjustments can be made while the rider is mounted, allowing the saddle to be balanced dynamically.

The air cushions adapt with the horse’s movement, absorbing impact and continuously redistributing pressure through every stride.

This isn't just a comfort feature, it's a biomechanical one, allowing the horse to move freely and evenly.

Here's the science

We took Flair® to be independently tested using advanced pressure-mapping technology to measure exactly how a saddle loads the horse’s back in motion.

Using a 256-sensor pressure mat capturing 40 frames per second, we compared the same horse, rider and saddle, first with traditional wool flocking, then after conversion to the Flair® air system.

Before Flair®

This map shows the saddle reflocked with new wool prior to testing. Despite careful preparation, pressure remains concentrated in specific areas, creating higher peak loading over a smaller bearing surface.

The green zones indicate increased pressure points.

The central blue zigzag lines (rider’s centre of gravity) show greater movement, reflecting reduced shock absorption and stability.

After Flair®

This map shows the same horse, rider and saddle after conversion to the Flair® air system.

Pressure is distributed more evenly across a larger surface area, lowering peak pressure and increasing overall support.

The rider’s centre of gravity is noticeably more stable due to the saddle absorbing the movement of the horse as it moves. This does not happen with traditional flocking.

Don't Forget the Rider: The Variable You're Not Weighing

Here's something that rarely gets said plainly: the saddle's weight is almost irrelevant compared to the variation in the rider's weight.

A rider’s weight can fluctuate over weeks by several kilograms due to a varity of factors. That variation can easily dwarf any difference between one saddle and another on the scale yet it's the saddle weight that tends to get scrutinised.

With WOW Saddles’ large bearing surface and pressure-distributing design, those differences become far less significant because the load is spread effectively.

The Bigger Picture: Fit, Not Figures

A saddle that fits well - one that sits in balance, corrects asymmetry in both horse and rider, and distributes the rider's weight over the maximum healthy surface area will always serve your horse better than one chosen by weight alone.

WOW Saddles are designed with this principle at their core. The modular system, the innovative tree design, and the Flair® air flocking panels all exist to serve one goal: keeping both horse and rider comfortable, balanced, and moving freely.

So next time someone asks you how much your saddle weighs, perhaps the better question is: "how well does it distribute that weight?"

A truly harmonious partnership begins with perfect balance and symmetry

WOW make the world’s only saddles with seatbone support and Flair™ air flocking, providing the ultimate saddle balance by correcting asymmetry in both horse and rider.
